The United Nations Global Compact is the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative counting with more than 9,500 companies and 3,000 non-business signatories based in over 160 countries, and with more than 70 Global Compact Local Networks (GCLNs) around the globe. Launched in 2000, the United Nations Global Compact is a call to companies to align strategies and operations with ten universal principles on human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption, and to take actions that advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Global Compact Network Norway was launched in October 2018 and constitutes of over 100 member companies across Norway. Previously a joint part of the Global Compact Nordic Network, the Norwegian network was established as a result of Global Compact’s vision to further advance the initiative, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Ten Principles at country level. The Network is now seeking its first Executive Director to build the initiative in Norway and engage Norwegian business in the sustainable development agenda.

Head of the Local Network Secretariat and reporting to the Local Network’s Board of Directors, the Executive Director of Global Compact Network Norway is responsible for overseeing and executing on the Network’s mission as well as managing all programs. The Executive Director will be responsible for delivering on the Network’s strategy and developing the strategy further in line with the Global Compact’s global strategy and the vision of the Norwegian chapter. The Norwegian organization will initially, in addition to the Executive Director, consist of one part-time employee, borrowed from NHO. In the long run, further resources may be considered in the form of trainees/interns. We emphasize that the Executive Director must be able and willing to work independently, with a strong operational focus. 

Duties and responsibilities

  • Developing and executing the organization’s strategy, value proposition and programs
  • Establishing and managing strategic partnerships including with other UN agencies
  • Advancing thought-leadership in current and emerging areas of corporate sustainability to existing and new members, and actively recruit new member companies to the network
  • Managing the day-to-day operations, including budgeting and financials, human resources, participant communications, event management and fundraising, while ensuring full alignment with Local Network Quality Standards and safeguarding UN Global Compact’s integrity and brand
  • Representing the Norwegian Network externally vis-à-vis companies, Governments, UN, media and others, as well as within the UN Global Compact global organization
  • Overseeing company recruitment and retention, and supporting Global Compact companies and other organizations’ efforts in meeting Global Compact requirements
  • Overseeing the organization of the annual global General Assembly and establish mechanisms to integrate global developments and best practice into national strategy and programs
  • Reporting to the GCLN Board and managing Board relations including taking and presenting minutes of all meetings; and collecting and circulating any relevant information to the Board

Qualifications

  • Experience from program management, management consulting or relevant management positions
  • Extensive knowledge in multi-stakeholder processes, ideally having worked both for/with public and private entities
  • Experience in managing teams, customer service and engaging with a professional Board of Directors
  • Documented, established and relevant network in Norway
  • Proven ability to deliver presentations to senior leadership and high-level partners
  • A “self-starter” with the ability to work independently to build the initiative and deliver on set goals and timelines, while being an effective team builder with the ability to motivate the organization and create engagement
  • Excellent networking and interpersonal skills and ability to represent the Global Compact Network in high-level events and meetings
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including full proficiency in Norwegian and English
  • Solid understanding of the UN Global Compact’s Ten Principles and engagement for the Sustainable Development Goals and the opportunities they represent to business
