Nefco is the Nordic Green Bank – the financial institution that provides only green financing.
Our purpose is to accelerate the green transition by financing environmentally sustainable
small and medium-sized enterprises focusing on Nordic solutions and technologies that have
the potential to be scaled up on global markets and have a substantial positive
environmental impact. Nefco invests its own funds and manages several trust funds on
behalf of the Nordic governments, the EU and international organisations.
We serve the interests of our owners, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, and
work with concrete actions to accelerate the green transition. We use a wide spectre of
financing instruments, from senior debt and mezzanine to equity and grants.
We focus on financing Nordic SMEs in the early growth phase, after the start-up phase, but
before commercial senior debt is available. We use a wide range of investment instruments,
ranging from equity to senior loans. Typically, this is unsecured debt extended to companies
with venture capital backing. We take higher financial risks than commercial banks and
provide financing earlier in the growth phase. Our involvement makes projects bankable and
helps to mobilise other investors.
